KIRKLAND, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities have charged a 42-year-old man with fatally shooting a woman’s show horse as it stood in a central New York pasture in December.

Police in the Oneida County town of Kirkland say Robert Webster Jr. of Durhamville was arrested Tuesday and charged with criminal mischief, aggravated animal cruelty and reckless endangerment.

Officials say Webster pulled his vehicle to the side of the road along a Kirkland farm on the afternoon of Dec. 29 and used a long gun to shoot a show horse named Jak once in the neck. The horse was owned by a 25-year-old woman whose family owns the farm.

The woman says her family doesn’t know Webster. The motive for the shooting hasn’t been released.

Webster is being held in the county jail on $25,000 bail. It couldn’t be determined if he has a lawyer.
