ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Gov. Mark Dayton says he supports his state auditor’s lawsuit challenging a new law that curbs her office’s powers.

State Auditor Rebecca Otto filed the lawsuit Thursday after months of mulling a legal challenge to the 2015 law. The measure allows counties to bypass Otto’s office and contract with private firms for financial audits.

Otto has sharply criticized the law, which Dayton initially vowed to veto but later signed into law as part of a larger bill.

The Democratic governor said he supports his auditor’s lawful effort to regain her authority. He says the measure passed last year was an unwise breach into Otto’s constitutional duties. Dayton previously served as Minnesota’s state auditor.

Republicans say the legal challenge is a waste of taxpayer dollars.
