LOS ANGELES (AP) - Swimmers and surfers are warned of powerful surf and dangerous rip currents that will hit the Southern California coast amid a significant warming trend.

The National Weather Service said Thursday that waves up to 8 feet will pound west-facing beaches through Friday.

A beach hazards statement is in effect in Los Angeles County. More serious high surf advisories are issued to the north in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

Meanwhile temperatures have begun to inch up, with summer-like highs in the 80s expected next week.

Forecasters say it could hit 87 degrees in San Gabriel Tuesday and Wednesday.
