ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York’s trial judges would get nearly $20,000 raises this year under an updated budget request from the judiciary.

A state commission recommended increasing the salary of state Supreme Court Justices from $174,000 to nearly $193,000.

That would be 95 percent of federal trial judges’ pay and proportionate increases for county, family, surrogate’s and city court judges.

The commission recommends raising Supreme Court pay to the same level as federal judges two years later to at least $203,100.

Chief Administrative Judge Lawrence Marks tells lawmakers the judiciary’s initial budget proposal predated that late December recommendation, which will cost $27 million.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman John Bonacic says the judges deserve raises within the courts’ $2.8 billion budget but questioned adding $15 million for civil legal services for the poor.
