PHENIX CITY, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say a Phenix City police officer shot and killed a dog that lunged at him and tried to bite him while the officer was performing an investigation.

Phenix City Police Chief Ray Smith tells the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer (https://bit.ly/1Pjp8Je ) that an unidentified male officer on Sunday evening was called to the parking lot of a Wal-Mart store and spotted a man and woman sleeping in a parked van.

Smith says the dog was inside the vehicle and became alarmed, jumping through the van’s window, trying to bit the officer. Smith says the animal was shot before it could jump on the officer.

Smith says an internal investigation determined that the officer’s actions did not violate the department’s policy or the law.
