COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The organization tasked by the late President Franklin Roosevelt with strengthening the morale of America’s military men and women is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

The South Carolina chapter of the USO is holding a cake cutting Thursday at its center in the Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

With the potential for war looming, Roosevelt asked several private organizations to form the United Service Organization in February 1941. It was tasked with keeping service members in touch with their friends and family members and to try to give them some comforts of home, no matter where they were serving.

The South Carolina chapter’s volunteers and staff greet around 7,000 military service members every month at the Columbia’s airport center.
