ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (AP) - The newly refurbished Silver Beach Carousel is set to reopen in downtown St. Joseph after being closed during January for renovations.

A new deck and floors, fresh varnish and other touches were included in the renovation work, said Kate Blakley, a representative of Carousel Works, the Ohio-based company that manufactured and installed the carousel in 2010. The new floor is made of a shiny concrete that reflects like a mirror, according to Ken Kaszubowski, the lead carousel operator.

Both Blakley and Kaszubowski noted that the carousel didn’t need much work because of the ongoing maintenance provided by staff.

“They take excellent care of the carousel, it’s in pristine condition,” Blakley said.

The indoor carousel will reopen Thursday, just in time for Waikiki Weekend, a tropical-themed event at the Silver Beach Center. The festivities will be held in conjunction with the Magical Ice Fest in the downtown area.

The merry-go-round is arranged in three rings with a total of 48 figures, including six white horses that are replicas of the original Silver Beach carousel from the early part of the 20th century, according to Blakley. It also features other menagerie figures, including local sports mascots, a giraffe, a snow leopard and a panda, and two chariot seats.

In March, the carousel will host LEGO exhibits, and the carousel’s model train exhibit will be revamped this spring, with displays highlighting Michigan’s history and geographical diversity, Kaszubowski.
