SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - A 39-year-old Canadian man has been sentenced to five years in an American federal prison for illegally smuggling 12 people across the border into the United States.

The U.S. Attorney’s office in Syracuse says Renaldo Reyes of Quebec was sentenced this week in federal court. He was found guilty last September of smuggling offenses after a three-day trial in Albany.

Authorities say Reyes conducted a dozen people across the border along northern New York and Vermont. Officials say each person paid him thousands of dollars in U.S. and Canadian cash and Reyes would then walk them across the border at night to a prearranged spot where they would be picked up in a vehicle.

Reyes was indicted and extradited from Canada last year.
