MADISON, Wis. (AP) - University of Wisconsin System President Ray Cross says the system must do more to acknowledge and understand students of color.

Cross issued a statement Friday addressing diversity, fulfilling a promise he made during a meeting last month with students, alumni and faculty concerned about a lack of progress on the issue.

Cross said he’s asking chancellors and regents to make the time and space necessary to facilitate a dialogue with students of color. He also touted plans to create a diversity council and hire a new special assistant for diversity and inclusion. He also pointed out the regents hand out diversity awards every February.

The board handed out the 2016 awards Friday to Chia Youyee Vang, a UW-Milwaukee professor; UW-Stout’s multicultural student services; and the UW Colleges’ 4-H systematics program.
