PINEVILLE, La. (AP) - The Holiday Village Fire Department is the first in Rapides Parish to make protective vests available to its crews.

Holiday Village Fire Chief Britt Bolen tells the Town Talk (https://townta.lk/1PRknG2) that the six vests, which arrived last week, were ordered because firefighters and other first responders have become soft targets for violence. He says that last month, an Arkansas firefighter was shot and killed while responding to a call about someone having a seizure.

Bolen says the firefighters usually work in three-person crews, so they wanted to have enough options for those who choose to use them.

The vests cost about $600 each. Board of Directors member Jerry Barrett says that in buying the vests, the department is trying to be proactive rather than reactive.
