NEW ORLEANS (AP) - An Orleans Parish jury has found a former New Orleans police recruit guilty of manslaughter.

Police have said Timothy Rainwater was killed Nov. 13, 2014 while attempting to steal Bradley Parvez’s bicycle. Parvez was initially charged with second-degree murder. NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports (https://bit.ly/1K2vQGI) the jury returned a 10-2 verdict Thursday.

Parvez testified that he feared for his life when Rainwater reached for his gun during a confrontation. Rainwater was shot between the shoulder blades and in the back of the head, and a ballistics expert said Parvez fired from inside the house through a glass door.

Parvez faces a maximum prison term of 40 years. Sentencing is scheduled for March 24.

Defense attorney Martin Regan said he will present a motion at sentencing for a new trial.
