PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The U.S. Department of health and Human Services says more than 84,000 Mainers signed up for health insurance for this year under the Affordable Care Act.

The Portland Press Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1SxRkyf ) that the figure represents a 27 percent increase in the state’s participation in the federal marketplace over 2015. More than 15,000 people are new to the program.

The number of Mainers who enrolled represents about 65 percent of the 125,000 residents who are eligible for coverage.

The state’s participation in the insurance marketplace has grown since 2014, when 45,000 people signed up. Maine has consistently ranked among the top states for enrollment percentage.

The most recent open enrollment period ended Sunday.
