NEW YORK (AP) - Authorities say two fires erupted barely three blocks away from each other in the Bronx, and two people have died and four others have been injured.

The blazes happened Saturday in homes near the West Farms and Parkchester neighborhoods. Police say they weren’t related, and officials are working to determine the causes of the fires.

One was reported around 3 a.m. in a home on Beach Avenue. Police say a 60-year-old woman was found unconscious in the basement. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Four other people also have been hospitalized.

About three hours later, authorities were called to another fire in a two-story apartment house on Guion Place.

Police say 26-year-old Carlos Villafane was pronounced dead at the scene. He was found severely burned on the top floor.
