ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Prosecutors say a gun dealer has been sentenced to 2 ½ years in prison for selling guns to a felon who was barred by law from buying them.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a press release that 55-year-old Philip Elliott also spoke to the felon about selling him rocket-propelled grenade launchers.

Elliott was sentenced Thursday. He ran Mountain Top Coins, Guns and Ammo in Franklin.

Authorities say when they arrested Elliott, they found about 20 guns that were not registered to be sold under requirements for gun dealers.

Federal law prohibits felons from owning firearms and gun dealers from selling them weapons.
