HOUSTON (AP) - Houston police say a man held after a disturbance at a convenience store has died after becoming unresponsive while waiting to be booked on a drug charge.

Police didn’t immediately release the name of the man who died Friday night at a Houston hospital.

Police responded to a report of a combative man punching and fighting with other store customers. Officers took the man into custody and contacted fire department medical personnel to examine the suspect, who was later released back to police.

Officials say the suspect was taken to jail, for booking on a charge of possession of a controlled substance, when he became unresponsive. Police administered CPR but the man later died at a hospital.

An autopsy was ordered.

Further details weren’t immediately released.
