WALDORF, Md. (AP) - A man who was shot by a sheriff’s deputy in Charles County after authorities said he reached for a gun in his waistband has been charged with assault and possession of a stolen handgun.

Twenty-three-year-old Anthony Taylor was shot by the deputy in Waldorf on Thursday. He was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff’s office said in a news release that the the officer confronted Taylor after watching him trying to get into an SUV that was stopped at a red light. Authorities say Taylor refused to show his hands and instead reached into his waistband, and the deputy opened fire.

The sheriff’s office said Friday that the handgun was stolen during a burglary in Pennsylvania.

Online court records did not list an attorney for Taylor.
