GREENWOOD, S.C. (AP) - A man has been ordered to spend 12 ½ years in prison after taking a plea deal in a fatal shooting at a Greenwood nightclub.

Authorities say Alphonso Morgan Jr. shot Jamaal Aiken in November 2013 during an argument at a nightclub.

Morgan’s lawyers planned to argue he killed Aiken in self-defense, but a judge denied that motion a few days before the plea, saying Morgan overreacted to the threat against him.

The Index-Journal of Greenwood reports (https://bit.ly/1mksNOP ) that Morgan was sentenced to 25 years in prison Friday, but the judge suspended half of the sentence as long as he completes three years of probation.

Morgan was originally charged with murder, but agreed to plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter.
