CLAYMONT, Del. (AP) - New Castle County Police say a Claymont man has passed away after a civilian detained him for alleged car tampering.

Media outlets report that the owner of the vehicle discovered 42-year-old John Fretchel on Tuesday hiding in the bushes near his driveway. New Castle Police Cpl. Tracey Duffy says the vehicle owner held Fretchel until police arrived.

When officers arrived, Duffy says Fretchel was having a “medical emergency.” Police tried to help him until paramedics arrived.

Fretchel died Friday morning. Duffy says police are still investigating the incident, and don’t know yet what compelled Fretchel to vandalize the vehicle or what the relationship was between Fretchel and the vehicle owner.

Delaware division of forensic science spokeswoman Kimberly Chandler says Fretchel’s manner of death hasn’t been determined.
