TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - About 150 people decked in bright-yellow rain ponchos marched through portions of Tampa, decrying the state’s plan to build express interstate toll lanes.

The Tampa Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1XaU2bY) the Stop TBX crowd on Saturday said the multibillion-dollar Tampa Bay Express project to build toll lanes along Interstates 275, 4 and 75 will do more harm than good.

State transportation officials for years have bought land along the interstates to prepare for an expansion, but plans announced last year to widen the roads for express toll lanes caught many by surprise. Interstate widening means buildings will be destroyed along the highway’s edge, some of which people have restored.

If the plan goes forward, commuters would pay a toll that would escalate in price as the express lane fills up.
