PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The state’s general treasurer is taking a leadership role in promoting financial literacy nationwide.

The treasurer’s office says Seth Magaziner has been selected to serve as the 2016 chairman of the financial literacy committee for the National Association of State Treasurers.

Magaziner says far too many people don’t have the financial education they need to navigate the complex financial system.

He says state treasurers play a vital role in empowering people to manage their finances, support their families and reach their financial goals.

The committee supports state treasurers in their initiatives related to personal money management.

In Rhode Island, Magaziner is working on a financial literacy program for high school students.

Magaziner also serves on the national association’s pension and debt management committees.
