CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) - An outburst that came as jurors delivered their verdict at the end of a murder trial has rattled the Eddy County Courthouse in Carlsbad.

The Carlsbad Current-Argus reports Judge Jane Shuler Gray ordered the courtroom to be cleared on Friday after a juror says a man lifted a pew in the gallery of the courtroom and “threw” it in the room.

The man’s identity wasn’t immediately known, but the juror believed he was a family member of Senovio Mendoza, who was found guilty Friday of first-degree murder for the death of 50-year-old Timothy Wallace during a home invasion.

No additional details about the courtroom incident were immediately available.

Chief Mark Cage of the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office says deputies escorted jurors home after the incident out of precaution for their safety.
