CLEVELAND (AP) - The U.S. Marine Corps’ chief defense counsel will become the new head of the federal public defender’s office in northern Ohio.

Cleveland.com reports (https://bit.ly/1R2nr7v ) Col. Stephen Newman has been appointed to a four-year team as the head of the office. It provides attorneys who defendants who can’t afford one.

The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati selected him for the job.

The 51-year-old replaces Dennis Terez, who was at the helm in the office since 2007. He’ll step down in April. Newman doesn’t know when he’ll start, but hopes to be sworn in my mid-May. He’ll be paid nearly $160,000.

Newman has been a Marine for nearly 25 years and has been chief defense counsel for the Marines since 2014.
