NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) - Police say 10 people have been charged with animal cruelty after officers discovered an illegal cockfight taking place in the basement of a New Britain home.

Police say they responded to the home Saturday after they received an anonymous complaint about a large cockfighting ring. Officers say they heard people cheering and roosters squawking when they arrived.

The Hartford Courant reports 10 adults were charged with animal cruelty and one minor was referred to juvenile court.

Police seized more than two dozen roosters and two hens from the home. Some of the animals were seriously injured and taken to the vet for treatment. Many of them were placed in the care of a farm facility.

All but one suspect was released on bond. They’re due in court Feb. 18.
