FORT PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The South Dakota Department of Agriculture says registration is open for the 2016 Wildland Fire Academy.

The agency says the academy will take place in Fort Pierre starting on March 17.

Robert Lehmann is assistant chief of training/fuels. He says the academy is the most cost effective way for the agency to get the most firefighters properly trained.

The event is a tool for providing quality training to volunteer fire departments and state and federal firefighters. Volunteer departments can get grants to offset the costs of participating in the training at the academy.
