TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Tempe Town Lake will close for boating and other water activities starting Wednesday for about 2 ½ months as the lake is drained so crews can remove a dam that will be replaced with a new one.

The city says the plan is allow water activities in the lake on the Salt River channel to resume April 30. However, officials say the timeline could change depending on weather conditions and progress of the construction.

The lake’s current rubber dam that will be replaced with one with steel gates.

Water from the lake will be moved into the Salt River Project irrigation system’s canals.
