GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office says one of its deputies was shot while responding to a report of a suspicious person with a gun in Grand Junction.

Investigators say Derek Geer was trying to take the 17-year-old boy into custody Monday morning when the suspect opened fire, hitting the deputy multiple times. The teenager ran away from the scene but has since been arrested.

Geer, a Navy veteran who has worked for the sheriff’s office since 2001, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. He is married and has two children, ages 13 and 11.

Charges are pending against the teenager, whose name has not been released.
