CHAMPION, Pa. (AP) - The 2016 Special Olympics Pennsylvania Winter Games have begun at Seven Springs Mountain Resort.

The games run through Tuesday at the resort about 50 miles southeast of Pittsburgh and at some locations in Johnstown, a few miles away.

The competition began Sunday night and features alpine and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and figure and speed skating.

More than 500 athletes and coaches from Pennsylvania, and parts of Maryland and Virginia are expected to participate.

This year marks the 39th annual winter games.
