RENO, Nev. (AP) - Authorities say scammers identifying themselves as sheriff’s personnel are calling Reno residents and telling them they owe fines.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports (https://on.rgj.com/1TOjfZL ) that a press release from the Washoe County Second Judicial District Court says the scammers tell residents they’re from the Washoe County Sheriff’s office. They claim the call recipient failed to show up for jury duty on a specific date and owes a fine of up to $2,500.

According to court officials, the scammers often add that multiple letters have been sent to the person and an arrest is imminent.

The press release says Second Judicial District Court does not call people over the phone to fine them for missing jury service.
