RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities on eastern Long Island are urging drivers to use extreme caution if they have to go out.

The Town of Riverhead said Monday that roads were already slippery and snow-covered by 8 a.m.

The town was preparing for 5 to 9 inches of snow by Monday afternoon. Winds could reach 20 to 30 mph with some stronger gusts.

Town officials also were reminding residents to keep fire hydrant areas cleared, watch over the elderly and make sure pets are properly sheltered.
