SHIRLEY, N.Y. (AP) - Police on Long Island say two people were fatally struck by cars in separate New Year’s Eve accidents.

Suffolk County police say 59-year-old William Martin was hit by two cars as he was walking on the Montauk Highway in Shirley at 5:20 p.m. Thursday. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene.

Then at 10:48 p.m., a 67-year-old woman was hit by a car as she tried to cross a street in Hicksville.

Nassau County police say the woman was pronounced dead at a hospital. Her name was not immediately released.

The drivers involved in the accidents remained at the scenes and were not charged.
