BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Birmingham saw its first homicide of 2016 less than three hours into the new year.

Local news media report that police were called to a home in southwest Birmingham at 2:30 a.m. Friday. Police say a man told officers at the scene that he shot 33-year-old Tiffany Nolan by mistake after she refused to leave his house.

Police have not released the man’s name. They say he has been detained and put on 48-hour hold while they continue to investigate. Formal charges were not immediately filed.

Police say the man called another woman and said Nolan wouldn’t leave his home. He then called the other woman back and said he had mistakenly shot Nolan.
