BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The city of Birmingham and Jefferson County saw a steep rise in the number of homicides in 2015.

Al.com reports (https://bit.ly/1Sqi2r0 ) there were 92 homicides in Birmingham, which is a 55 percent increase compared to 2014. Birmingham had 59 homicides in 2014. The 2015 number represents the most homicides the city has experienced since 2008.

With 143 homicides, up from 88 in 2014, Jefferson County had a 62 percent increase.

Two of Birmingham’s 2015 homicides were considered accidental by Birmingham police and 10 others were ruled justifiable. Al.com’s homicide numbers don’t include traffic fatalities that led to criminal charges.

Birmingham’s first homicide of 2016 came less than three hours into the new year, when a woman was fatally shot at 2:30 a.m. Friday.
