CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) - Chandler police say a man fabricated a story about an intruder to cover up fatally shooting his friend by accident.

Police spokesman Seth Tyler said Friday that 19-year-old Nathaniel Thomas has been arrested in the shooting death of Gage Bodenheimer.

According to investigators, the suspect and the victim were among several people in Thomas’ apartment Thursday morning.

Thomas allegedly pointed a handgun at Bodenheimer, who was sleeping, as a joke.

Thomas told police he believed there was no bullet inside and pulled the trigger, fatally striking Bodenheimer.

Thomas initially told 911 that he had shot an intruder.

Detectives say witness statements and evidence disputed the claim.

According to charging documents, Thomas is facing one count of second-degree murder with extreme indifference.

It was not known if Thomas had an attorney.
