JAFFREY, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire residents who want to begin 2016 with some exercise can take one of four free, guided hikes being offered in state parks as part of a national program.

This is the fifth year the New Hampshire Division of Parks and Recreation has sponsored free hikes on New Year’s Day as part of America’s State Parks First Day Hikes initiative.

Park staff and volunteer land stewards will be leading hikes Friday in Monadnock State Park in Jaffrey, Silver Lake State Park in Hollis, Weeks State Park in Lancaster and the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion historic site in Portsmouth. The hikes range in distance from 1 mile to 3.2 miles.
