ESTILL, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a suspect has been arrested in the shooting of an Estill police officer on New Year’s Day.

WTOC-TV (https://bit.ly/1UkoX3p) reports that officers had responded to a call about a disturbance at a convenience store and briefly chased a man, who then opened fire on them and fled. Officer Quincy Smith was wounded in the gunfire.

Officials say officers from several departments searched for the suspect for about two hours before taking Malcolm Orr into custody.

Local media outlets report that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division will assist in the investigation.

Smith was reportedly undergoing surgery at a Savannah, Georgia, hospital.

It was not immediately clear what charges Orr faces or whether he has a lawyer who could comment.
