SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Police say they rescued a man from the flames engulfing a home he set on fire in a Salt Lake City suburb on New Year’s Eve.

West Jordan police officer Ian Adams says officers were responding to a Thursday evening call about a suicidal man hurting himself and attacking family members.

Adams says family members had escaped uninjured by the time police arrived, but the man was inside the house and in the process of setting it on fire.

According to Adams, two officers ran into the burning home to save the man, who tried to fight them off. Police say he had a weapon.

They subdued him and took him to the hospital to be treated for self-inflicted wounds and smoke inhalation.

Authorities are investigating the incident.
