CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - State and local chapters of the NAACP and religious organizations are holding a service in remembrance of 1-year-old Maleah Williams, who was killed in a drive-by shooting as she played outside with her new toys on Christmas Day.

The service will be held Friday afternoon at St. Joseph’s CME Church in Chapel Hill, where Maleah lived.

The Rev. Michelle Laws is executive director of the state chapter of the NAACP and a Chapel Hill native who grew up in the same public housing complex as Maleah. She says the “community’s collective heart is broken over the tragic senseless death …”

Three men have been charged with murder in the death of Maleah, who died Monday.
