SAN DIEGO (AP) - The California Highway Patrol says two women riding in an SUV were seriously wounded by gunfire from another vehicle on Interstate 8 in San Diego.

CHP Officer Kevin Pearlstein says at least a dozen rounds were fired at the black Cadillac Escalade in eastbound lanes early Monday in the La Mesa area.

Investigators have not released descriptions of the shooter or the suspect vehicle.

Pearlstein says bullets struck a 31-year-old front seat passenger and a 29-year-old woman sitting behind her. The women, both from El Cajon, were hospitalized with life-threatening wounds.

The Escalade’s driver, a 38-year-old man, and a fourth occupant, a 28-year-old man, were not hurt.
