LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Tree piles in several forest areas of northwestern Nebraska will be burned in the coming weeks.

The Nebraska Games and Park Commission plan to burn piles of dead trees at Chadron State Park as soon as this week. Commission officials say snow coverage provides the appropriate conditions for burning.

Area manager Greg Schenbeck says efforts to begin burning piles in several wildlife management areas are also underway. The sites that have remaining wood piles to be burned this winter include areas near Harrison, Hay Springs and Crawford.

Commission officials say the trees are removed from the forest in order to reduce fuels that may ignite wildfires and to provide better pine habitat for wildlife.
