BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - A Lyons man who struck and killed a Boulder bicyclist in 2013 while driving drunk has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

The Daily Camera reports (https://goo.gl/VnMfU3 ) 72-year-old Patrick Ward was sentenced Monday for the death of 46-year-old Michael Van Duym. Ward pleaded guilty in October to one count of vehicular homicide.

He was arrested May 11, 2013, after investigators said he drove his SUV across the double yellow lines on Main Street in Lyons and struck Duym, who was headed in the opposite direction.

It took almost three years for Ward’s case to come to a conclusion, in part, because of concerns about his competency. Ward was deemed unfit for trial in 2014, but finally ruled competent to proceed in 2015.
