GREENWOOD, S.C. (AP) - State senators joined family members and state and local leaders in paying final respects to state Sen. Billy O’Dell.

The veteran lawmaker died last Thursday. He was 77.

The Index-Journal of Greenwood reports (https://bit.ly/1mSEn4H) former Lt. Gov. Yancey McGill called O’Dell “humbled, focused with a strong, ethical work ethic” during Monday’s funeral service at a church in Greenwood. McGill also said O’Dell was an advocate for education, health care and economic development.

Entering the Senate in 1989, O’Dell served on several powerful committees including Senate Finance and Labor, Commerce and Industry. He also chaired the General Committee, which serves as a catch-all for special projects, such as the panel that investigated the Department of Social Services over the past two years.

This story has been corrected to show that Yancey McGill is a former lieutenant governor.
