LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A Boone County farmer has registered to run for a central Nebraska district seat in the Legislature.

Tom Briese filed paperwork Tuesday with Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale to declare his candidacy.

Briese is a corn and soybean farmer near Albion, a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Nebraska College of Law. Briese says he will prioritize lower property taxes, strong schools and job opportunities for young people in rural communities.

Sen. Kate Sullivan of Cedar Rapids has held the seat since 2008. She is not eligible for re-election due to term limits.

The primary election is scheduled for May 10, and the general election is Nov. 8.
