CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - The father of a University of Virginia graduate who died of an opioid overdose will attend President Obama’s final State of the Union address.

The Daily Progress (https://bit.ly/1SLXrh8 ) reports Don Flattery, whose son Kevin Flattery died in 2014, will be the guest of Sen. Timothy Kaine of Virginia at Tuesday’s address. Kaine and Flattery are both hoping the president will address the problem of opioid addiction during the speech.

Flattery says his son died after he began using OxyContin. He says his son tried to quit, but the 26-year-old died before he was supposed to start a new treatment regimen.

Kaine calls Flattery a powerful advocate because his story shows the dangers of drug addiction - a problem he says is impacting families from all walks of life.
