FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - A Fresno mother was sentenced to 70 days in jail for leaving her three small children alone in an apartment that later caught fire.

The Fresno Bee reports (https://bit.ly/1RzFJy6 ) that the 20-year-old woman was also sentenced Monday to four years of probation and a child abuse treatment program.

Police say the woman left children ages 1, 3 and 4 alone for at least 30 minutes last January while walking to a store more than half a mile away. A fire broke out while she was gone.

The children were treated for severe smoke inhalation.

Prosecutor asked for prison time. But the judge thought the mother would benefit from the services and supervision provided by probation.

She will also have to enroll in counseling and a substance abuse program if her probation officer tells her to.
