PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Police say the grandson of former Providence Mayor Buddy Cianci (see-AN’-see) has been arrested in connection with a shooting outside a recreation center over the weekend.

Police say 18-year-old Joseph Cianci is charged with possession of a weapon that’s not a firearm. He’s scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.

The incident report says Cianci and 18-year-old Joshua Conti were sitting in a car on Saturday when a man approached the driver’s-side window and opened fire. Conti was injured and taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where he’s in stable condition. The shooter fled the scene and remains at large.

It’s not clear how Cianci’s charge relates to the shooting.

Buddy Cianci tells WPRI-TV his grandson was a witness.
