U.S. stocks closed higher on Tuesday, rebounding on a late wave of buying led by gains in technology and health care. The gain was the first this year for the Nasdaq composite index, which is heavily weighted with technology companies.

On Tuesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 117.65 points, or 0.7 percent, to 16,516.22.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index added 15.01 points, or 0.8 percent, to 1,938.68.

The Nasdaq composite rose 47.93 points, or 1 percent, to 4,685.92.

For the week:

The Dow is up 169.77 points, or 1 percent.

The S&P; 500 is up 16.65 points, or 0.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 42.29 points, or 0.9 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 908.81 points, or 5.2 percent.

The S&P; 500 is down 105.26 points, or 5.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 321.49 points, or 6.4 percent.
