BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - Police say a 40-year-old mother is dead and her 9-year-old was hospitalized in critical condition after they were both struck by a pickup truck while crossing a Bridgeport street.

The accident occurred around 4:15 p.m. Monday as Carmen Martinez and her son, who wasn’t identified, were crossing John Street about 20 feet from its intersection with West Avenue.

Capt. Brian McCarthy says the mother and son were struck by a GMC pickup driven by 70-year-old Joseph Frazier of Berkley, Massachusetts.

Frazier remained at the scene. McCarthy says he hasn’t been charged pending further investigation.

The boy was taken to Bridgeport Hospital and later transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital. Martinez was pronounced dead at St. Vincent’s Medical Center.

Police were unable to confirm reports that Martinez died shielding her son.
