NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - A Newport News elementary school will be closed after crews found lead paint throughout the building.

Local news outlets report officials at Hilton Elementary posted an alert on their website saying the school will be closed Jan. 12. Officials say crews discovered the lead-based paint when they were stripping paint to put on a new coat.

The school consulted with an industrial hygienist and began cleanup Monday night. The cleanup will continue Tuesday.

The alert says the school will be closed until air quality tests yield good results.
