OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma’s Teacher of the Year for 2016 has been named one of four finalists for National Teacher of the Year award.

The Oklahoma State Department of Education announced Tuesday that Shawn Sheehan is a finalist for the award with teachers from California, Connecticut and Washington state.

Sheehan is a specialized algebra teacher at Norman High School and was named state Teacher of the Year in September. He has traveled the state to speak to future teachers and present a positive image of teaching.

Sheehan will travel to Washington, D.C., in February for interviews with the selection committee. The president will recognize the National Teacher of the Year during a White House ceremony this spring.
