TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Police say a Tampa convenience store clerk shot and critically injured a would-be robber.

The shooting took place around 3 p.m. Monday at Hope Food Store.

In a news release, Tampa police spokesman Stephen Hegarty said 38-year-old Mutasem Abusafyeh called 911 to report a knife-wielding man had come into the store and was demanding money. The clerk told the dispatcher he warned the man but he continued toward him. Abusafyeh fired one time.

An arriving Tampa police officer performed CPR on 22-year-old Anthone Bryant. He was then taken to Tampa General Hospital with what police described as life-threatening injuries.

The clerk is cooperating with the investigation. No charges have been filed, but the investigation continues.
